Dian Sourelis is a lifelong Chicago resident. Her rich experience with art and artists began with her painter father, Stanley and included family members Barbara Chavous, Sherrie Sourelis, son Sabin West, and sister Pamela Sourelis, who is a fiction writer. Creativity, passionate opinions, personal expression and the permission to make a mess informed a lifetime of artistic expression. Dian studied fine art at the Philadelphia College of Art, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Loyola University with a degree in Art Education. For over 20 years Dian has exhibited her paintings and constructions in both group and solo shows at many Chicago venues including the Evanston Art Center, Women Made Gallery, the Curators Show of Around the Coyote, Ancient Echos and the ARC Gallery. Her work can be found in the collections of Chicago individuals and corporations. |

Perhaps it is the Gemini in me that pulls me in two equal directions artistically. Constructions give me peace. Finding odd, beautiful objects and photos and combining them to tell stories or evoke feelings. They are peaceful, yet strong, like the people in the images, or the sturdy little rusted objects themselves. And then I paint. Large, red, overflowing, bountiful paintings. Usually on found substrates. Wood scraps. Discarded silk-screen frames. Sometimes canvass, but rarely stretched. These pieces are as noisy as the constructions are peaceful. As I said, perhaps it is the Gemini in me. |
